Penfold Reptiles is based in Kent, owned and run by Terry Matthews and Sarah Appleton BSc(hons).

Terry, aka Penfold has over 30 years of experience working with reptiles. He started off when he was 7 keeping frogs caught from the garden and progressed from there. He bred his first boa constrictor 10 years ago and has expanded his collection ever since. Currently Terry is the assistant manager at Vanishing World, a pet shop that specialises in the selling of reptiles. He has worked there for over 10 years and has developed the shops reputation. He is often sought for advice form Wildwoods, Rare Species Conservations Centre and Rare breeds Centre. 

Sarah has work with reptiles ever since she was 16. She started work at her father’s reptile breeding facility, (Herpbreed.uk).  After completing A-levels and a Zoology degree at Bangor University she went on to continue acquiring experience working with animals. She has helped out at Reptilandia in Gran Canaria on several occasions, completed two spells working in Thailand tracking sea turtles and worked as a zoo keeper at Wildwoods in Kent, which entailed looking at British Reptiles. Currently Sarah teaches Science to secondary school children where she has introduced many species of animals, particularly reptiles and amphibians into the classroom, aiming to improve children’s knowledge of these animals.

Our collection

Over the last few years we have built up our collection of boa constrictors and pythons. We have a variety of pythons including bloods, dwarf Burmese and dwarf reticulated pythons. We are working on many breeding programmes, one of which looks to introduce the purple phase albino reticulated python into the dwarf. Most recently we have bought into the urban gecko lines of leopard geckos, as well as keeping our older residents of crested and gargoyle geckos.  Over the years we have also got involved with other animals, permanent residents include axolotls, tortoises, ferrets (Slinky, Molly and Tallulah) pixie frogs and last but not least “Elly“ the Harris Hawk, god knows whats next.

We try to use the best equipment, caging and feeds that we can acquire.  In the last month we have just switched over to Pro Rack reptile housing, which is probably the market leader in reptile housing.
